Obituary

Helen P. Martino, 91, formerly of Mendham, NJ, passed away on August 15, 2018 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham, MA. She was born on January 14, 1927 in East Orange, NJ to Harry Layton Preston and Antoinette Carchet Preston. Helen grew up on Ironia Rd. in Mendham Township, NJ. She was a 1948 graduate of Syracuse University School of Nursing where she met her husband Frank. She lived in New York, Syracuse and Buffalo before returning to Mendham in 1949. Helen worked as an RN at All Soul’s Hospital in Morristown, was a Private Duty Nurse and was also a night supervisor at Holly Manor Nursing Home in Mendham before retiring in 1991. Helen served as Vice President of the Mendham Garden Club, was a member of the Ralston Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary and the Brookside Ambulance Squad, and a Cub Scout Den Mother. She was an avid gardener and took great care of not only her own gardens but also those of the town, particularly the Mendham Triangle. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, needlework and oil painting. Helen and Frank’s grandchildren brought them much joy and visits to Mendham would include special meals and treasure hunts organized by Helen and golf and fishing trips with Frank. Helen was predeceased by her loving husband of 64 years, Frank Martino Sr. and two sons, Frank Martino Jr. and Greg Martino. She is survived by her son Ronald Martino (Elaine) of OH and daughter Janine Everts (Bob) of Needham, MA, brother Harry (Linda) Preston of CA, sister Elyse (Franklyn) Hasty of PA, and 3 grandchildren: Will (Jill) Everts, Spencer Everts and his fiancé Kelly Herdman, and Katie Everts.

A Memorial Service for Frank and Helen Martino will be held on Saturday September 1, 2018 at 10 am at St. Marks Church, 9 East Main St., Mendham NJ. A reception/luncheon following the service will be held at Dantes Restaurant, at 100 East Main Street in Mendham. A burial service for immediate family will take place after the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Helen can may be made to the Mendham Borough Garden Club, Phoenix House, 2 West Main Street, Mendham, N.J. 07945.
