Obituary

Harriet S. Atwood, 82, of Stonington, formerly of Litchfield, widow of Albert S. Atwood, MD, passed away November 28th at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Born in 1923 in West Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Harry R. and Ellen (Morander) Swanson. She graduated from Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. After moving from Harwinton to Litchfield in 1961, Mrs. Atwood continued her volunteer work in Public Health, the Women’s Exchange, and the League of Women Voters. In Stonington, she was an active volunteer at the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center and a member of both a Bridge Club and Reading Group. She enjoyed the opera and the NY Times Crossword Puzzles and was renowned for her culinary skill.

Mrs. Atwood is survived by four children, Paula of Greenbelt, MD, Benjamin of Stonington, Sidney of Boston, MA, and Eugene of Hoosatonic, MA, 5 grandchildren, Eugene, Samuel, Sage, Eric, and Blake; a sister, Marabeth Wedewer of Tallahassee, Fla, and two brothers, Arthur Swanson of Charleston, SC and Harold Swanson of Williamsburg, VA, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Thursday from 3-6pm. The family will gather privately for a Graveside Service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dension Pequotsepos Nature Center, 109 Pequotsepos Road, Mystic CT 06355.
