Plymouth – Phyllis (Benson) Luddy 94, formerly a longtime resident of Whitman, died Friday August 17 after a brief period of failing health. She was the beloved wife of over 62 years to the late Robert J. “Pat” Luddy.
Born and raised in Whitman, she was the daughter of the late John and Sadie (Berg) Benson and a graduate of Whitman High School.
Phyllis was a longtime resident and familiar face in Whitman, where she and her husband Pat had raised their five children and had owned and operated a “Dairy Queen” in town.
She will be fondly remembered for hosting countless “Benson Family” Christmas parties, a long standing tradition in her large extended family.
In her retirement she had volunteered with the local Meals on Wheels and had enjoyed listening to opera music.
She loved the many enjoyable summers spent camping at White Lake in New Hampshire and had also enjoyed searching for treasures while metal detecting, but her greatest joy always was her family.
She is survived by her loving children Lisa Courcy and her husband Joseph of Beverly, Lynn Sheridan and her husband William of Lisbon, NH, Tina Mitchell and her husband Dana of Dover, NH, David Luddy and his wife Stacy of Avon and Jennifer Luddy and her husband Seth Dunn of Northampton. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings, Wallace, Raymond and John Benson, Elizabeth Keith, Barbara Hanson and Marguerite Packard.
Her funeral service will be held Friday August 24 at 11:00 AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. Burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Rockland. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service from 9:00-11:00 AM.
