Joan K. (Hughes) Harvey, 87, passed away in her Noank home on August 17, 2018. She is survived by three children; Michael (Veronika), Michele and Patricia (Timothy); six grandchildren, one great great niece and one great granddaughter. She also leaves behind her sister Mary Jane Pollard, and numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, James Harvey, son Mark and daughter Heather.
Born to James Henry Hughes and Eleanor MacDonald Hughes, Joan graduated Fitch High School in 1949 and from White Plains Hospital School of Nursing in 1952. She always stayed in touch with her class members, attending numerous reunions including the 50th reunions. She had special training in psychiatric nursing, and capped her career by caring for people suffering from chemical dependencies at Stonington Institute, formerly Starlite Farm. Although spiritually anchored to Noank, she traveled widely, living four years in Scotland and Spain in the 1960s, trips to the West Coast and Hawaii, as well as making numerous visits to Russia and Mexico.
Joan’s family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic on Friday, 24 August, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Church on 69 Groton Long Point Rd on Saturday at 10:00 am. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery, River Road, Mystic.
