MEREDITH-----Sonja Magdalena Scheidler, 84, of Meredith, passed away on Monday, July 30, 2018 at Forestview Manor in Meredith.
Sonja was born on March 1, 1934 in Lyss, Switzerland to the late Fritz and Madeleine (Gerber) Jakob. She came to America in 1956 where she met her husband, Fred. They married in May of 1958 and enjoyed 57 devoted years together. The two settled in Connecticut where they worked and raised three children. They experienced 20 joyful years of retirement on Cape Cod, sailing, fishing and vacationing with friends and family.
She was an avid lifelong learner, believing one could never obtain enough knowledge. Her varied careers included violinist, nanny, French teacher and investment banker. Above all, Sonja’s favorite job was being a mother.
Sonja enjoyed painting, music and traveling with her husband to Switzerland where she loved spending time with her relatives. She had a wonderful, unique sense of humor which she continued even into her last days. Sonja was a genuinely caring person, always looking out for others and putting them first.
Sonja is survived by her daughter, Becky Vallar and her husband, Tom, her son Jeff and his wife, Jane, and her youngest son, Stephen. She also leaves behind five grandchildren, Daniel, Brittany, Joe, Kate and Samantha along with one great-grandchild, Noah. Her family in Switzerland includes her brothers, Pierre and Roland Jakob as well as her sister, Elizabeth Fivaz and their children, Madeleine, Sam, Florence, Pierre, Philip, Daniel and Michael. In addition to her parents, Sonja was predeceased by her loving husband, Frederick Scheidler.
At Sonja’s request, there will be no calling hours or funeral services.
