Obituary

SPENCER: John James McComas, 74, formerly of Spencer and California, died Sunday, July 29, after a short illness in Cagayan de Oro City Hospital, Northern Mindanao, Philippines. His funeral Mass took place on August 2, 2018 at Initao Catholic Church in Initao, Philippines, followed by his burial.

He leaves his wife of 28 years, Carmencita M. (Bagares) McComas of Initao, Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines, three step children; Maria Aruba Ward of Washington state, Mark Chang of Sacramento, California, and Diana Chang. He also leaves his sister Ann (McComas) Walsh and her husband James of Hazel Green, Wisconsin, and his brother William McComas and his wife, Nancy, of Spencer. Locally, John leaves his niece and nephew as well as three great nieces and one great nephew. John leaves his only surviving uncle, John Niejadlik of Sturbridge. He leaves many relatives in the Philippines. He is predeceased by his parents, Stella (Niejadlik) and James McComas of Spencer.

John graduated from David Prouty High School and later attended Worcester Junior College as well as Union College in Barbourville, KY where he was captain for their respective tennis teams. As an avid tennis player, John was regionally ranked in the Northeast winning numerous regional tournaments. In his retirement, he was the co-owner of a tennis academy in the Philippines.

John was employed by numerous food service companies throughout his career, starting from the “Bum Steer” restaurant in Spencer to high-end eateries at Harvard Square, Cambridge. John was an avid Boston sports fan, enjoyed gardening, and was an animal lover with a peaceful demeanor.
