Obituary

Townsend Reed Morey Jr, 87 of Longboat Key, Florida passed in his sleep on Tuesday 31 July, 2018.

Known by many as Townie or Pas Pa. Born in 1930 in Albany NY. He is survived by: Three Sons; Townsend Reed Morey III of Natick, MA, David Neff Morey of Washington, DC. and Martin Neff Morey of Saratoga Springs, NY; Six grandchildren: Townsend R Morey IV, Sarah Q Morey, Theodore M. Morey, Karina J. Morey, Cameron R. Morey and Ashton T. Morey, Three Daughter’s in law, Five nieces and nephews and his younger brother Martin N Morey, 84. of Vero Beach, FL.

He was preceded by his father Townsend Reed Morey, mother Mary Nachtmann Morey of Albany, NY. his sister Alice M. Bourne of Buffalo, NY and his wife of 25 years, Paula Neff Morey.

Townie was a graduate of The Albany Academy in 1948 and then Brown University in 1952 with a BA in Economics. He was commissioned a US Naval officer in 1953 and served during the Korean War on destroyers and submarines before retiring in the reserves as a Lieutenant Commander.

His career spanned 25 years in the insurance brokerage business as President of the Townsend R Morey Agency an insurance company in Albany that he merged in 1977 with Alexander & Alexander now Marsh & McLennan.

Townie was a lifelong Martha’s Vineyard Summer resident of Edgartown where he grew up in the 1930’s, loved the water and competitive sailing. In 1958 he participated in the America’s cup in Newport, RI aboard VIM USA-15 during the first ever 12 Meter trails. As a longtime member of The Edgartown and The New York Yacht Clubs, he skippered Robin Hood his Little Harbor/Hood 40’ (1990-1996), Checkmate his Islander 44’ (1969-1976) and numerous chartered big boats (1976-1986) to victory on the race course. He enjoyed the fierce competition and the tactics of sailing and made racing a family event. He learned to fly single engine airplanes in 1948 at Katama Airfield, maintained an active pilots license for 65 years, owned numerous single engine aircraft, was active in the Civil Air Patrol but most of all enjoyed flying with his sons, two of which were US Navy Pilot trained.

Mr. Morey was a past: Trustee and President of the First Presbyterian Church in Albany, Director of the Albany Academy Alumni Association, Treasurer of the Albany County Historical Association, Director of Governor Clinton Council Boy Scouts and Chairman of their Special Projects Committee, President of the Dutch Settlers Society and President of the Albany Ski Club.

Mr. Morey held past memberships at: The Sarasota, Rotary Club, Master Lodge #5 F&AM, Albany Institute of History & Art, Brown University Club, Civil Air Patrol, The Chappaquidick Beach Club, The Edgartown Yacht Club, The New York Yacht Club, The Schuyler Meadows Club and Christ Church of Longboat Key.

The Family will receive those that wish to pay respects at 0930 on Friday 10 August 2018 in the assembly hall at the First Presbyterian Church 362 State St, in Albany, NY. Services will start at 11 AM in the sanctuary and interment will be at Albany Rural Cemetery Menands, NY.
