Graham, David H., of Woods Hole passed away on July 27, 2018. Born on March 21, 1942, David was the beloved son of the late Ruth (Thompson) Graham and Herbert W. Graham and the dear brother of Anne Graham Tricomo, of Auburn, California.
A lifelong mariner and sailor, David loved nothing more than to be out on the waters surrounding Woods Hole. Dave loved racing Cape Cod Knockabouts at the Woods Hole Yacht Club where he began as a Junior racer. As a boy, he saved the earnings from his paper route to buy his first boat, the ‘Sundowner’, and more recently he owned and raced ‘Hecate’.
He was an expert marine specimen collector in support of the groundbreaking scientific research conducted at the Marine Biological Laboratory. For many years, David served as captain of the 40-foot research vessel ‘Ciona’, adding to the local knowledge and passing it on to the next generation.
David also had successful careers working with Dan Clark in marine construction and Dave Silva in excavating and landscaping. He volunteered many hours helping Brian Handy in his cranberry bogs planting seedlings where he introduced bumble bee houses to help with pollination. He was a lifetime member of the Barnstable County Beekeepers Association of which his father was a founding member in 1972.
Dave was an avid ecologist and shared his enthusiasm and broad knowledge of the natural world with many friends, some of whom he mentored to become beekeepers. He could identify countless species of plants and animals both on land and from the coastal ocean and spread his enthusiasm for nature and marine life by sending handwritten notes, articles and books to friends of all ages. Above all, David was a wonderfully generous person.
In addition to his sister, he leaves his nephews, David and Scott Tricomo, both of California, and a cousin, James Doutt, of Woods Hole. Always a loyal and generous friend, David also leaves a large circle of devoted friends in Woods Hole and beyond.
Burial services will be private.
