Loving grandfather of Matthew, Leigh and Sarah Stokey, Will and Peter Abdu, Zachary and Eliza Abdu-Glass, James Louis Abdu and Chloe and Ella Brisson; brother of Jeannette George of Taunton, MA.
Funeral from the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton, Tuesday at 9am. The Service of the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Theresa Maronite Catholic Church, 343 N. Main Street, Brockton at 10am. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visiting Hours Monday 4-8pm, with an Incense Service at 6pm. Louis Abdu, MD, son of the late Shafia (Maloof) and Elias Abdu, died on Friday, November 25, 2005 at the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center, Brockton, MA at the age of 89, after a short period of failing health.
Dr. Abdu was born and raised in Brockton. He graduated from Brockton High School, class of 1933, and he was a member of the undefeated football team. He attended Tufts University where he was elected senior class president, captain of the football team and class valedictorian, graduating in 1938.
Dr. Abdu graduated from Tufts Medical School in 1942 and six months later volunteered for the Army during WW II where he served in the medical corps. He was recognized for both his heroism and compassion. Dr. Abdu was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and was held a prisoner of war for over six months. He escaped only to be recaptured, finally being liberated at the end of the war.
Upon returning to Brockton, Dr. Abdu opened his family medical practice. He was on staff at the former Cardinal Cushing Hospital in Brockton, and at the Brockton Hospital where he met the love of his life, Shirley Louise Owens, to whom he was wed in 1947.
Dr. Abdu practiced family medicine in Brockton for over 40 years and served many generations of Brocktonians as both a physician and community leader. He served as the Director of the Board of Health for the City of Brockton, and he was the medical director at Stonehill College, Easton, Mass. both for many years. His family and his patients were the focus of his life. He was well known and loved for his attentiveness to his patients, his bedside manner, and for the many house-calls he made in times of need. He took special care of his elderly and infirm patients, often recruiting his children to shop and deliver groceries for them. He was an early proponent of the medical use of hypnosis in treating his patients, particularly for the treatment of smoking, weight loss and phobias. He was the embodiment of a true family practitioner until his retirement in 1987.
Dr. Abdu was an active member of the Lebanese community, supporting his family’s Maronite Church in Lebanon as well as Saint Theresa’s Church in Brockton where he served as building chairman. He will be remembered as a kind and compassionate physician, a wonderful father and grandfather, and a true friend to many. Dr. Abdu is pre-deceased by his wife Shirley, and a son Robert. He leaves his children and their families, L. Stephen Abdu of East Hampton NH; Dr. William Abdu of Hanover, NH.; Andrea Stokey of Falmouth, MA; Alison Abdu-Glass of Lexington, MA, James Abdu of Bourne, MA; and Alisa Abdu-Brisson of Hanover, NH, ten grandchildren Matthew, Leigh and Sarah Stokey, Will and Peter Abdu, Zachary and Eliza Abdu-Glass, James Louis Abdu and Chloe and Ella Brisson; a sister Jeannette George of Taunton, MA, and many nieces and nephews.
Dr. Abdu was the brother of the late Toufic Nessralla, Najib Nessralla, Najibey Nessralla,Edna Nessralla, Delia Naymie, Katherine Mahanna, Anne George and Anna May Colell.
