Joana "Gorda" (DePina) Vieira, 89, of New Bedford passed away Tuesday July 24, 2018 at Brandon Woods of New Bedford after a long illness. She was the wife of Joao R. Vieira.
Born in Fogo, Cape Verde, the daughter of the late Jose and Laura (Lopes) DePina, she had resided in New Bedford since 1979.
She was a member of the Portuguese Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Mrs. Vieira was formerly employed as a stitcher at Cliftex Clothing and Grinnell Pajama Company until her retirement.
She enjoyed traveling, baking, and cooking. She had a special fondness for animals and horses.
Her family would like to thank the staff of Brandon Woods of New Bedford and Community Nurse Home Care for the special care given to Joana during her illness.
She is survived by her husband, Joao; her children, John Vieira of Brazil and Anita Grimes of Dartmouth; her siblings, Maria Macedo of New Bedford, Ana Paula Miranda of Brockton, and Gertrudes Gonçalves and Herminio DePina, both of Fogo; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and many friends.
She was the mother of the late Arthur D. Vieira, and sister of the late Ligia Monteiro, Jose DePina, Alfonso DePina, and Catarina Gomes.
Her Funeral will be held on Friday July 27, 2018 at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Service at the Portuguese Seventh-day Adventist Church, 413 Rockdale Ave., New Bedford at 9 AM.
