Philbert M. Roderick, 84, of Provincetown passed away Saturday, July 21st at the Pleasant Bay Nursing Home in Brewster. His wife, Joanne M. Roderick, died in April of 2005.
Born in Provincetown, he was the son of Joseph and Justine (Veara) Roderick. After graduating from Provincetown High School, he enlisted in the US Navy. His naval career included serving aboard the submarines USS Albacore and USS Abraham Lincoln. After discharge, he eventually returned to Provincetown to raise his family. Like many local residents, over the years Phil worked a variety of jobs, including driving school buses, driving for the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority, and driving trucks. Most recently, he worked for the Town of Provincetown, Department of Public Works. Over the years, he especially enjoyed his interactions with the many people he met.
Phil served his community as a member of the Provincetown Rescue Squad and a volunteer firefighter on Engine One. He was also a member of St. Peter the Apostle Parish, The Walter Welsh Council, Knights of Columbus, the Lewis Young Post VFW, and the Morris Light Post, American Legion.
Mr. Roderick is survived by sons Philbert Roderick Jr, of Provincetown, Stephen Roderick of Truro, and daughters Anna Leister of Braintree, and Joanne Haley of Easton. He also leaves a niece, Karen Silva of Provincetown, along with 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. In addition to his wife Joanne, he was predeceased by sons Mark D. Roderick and Randy Roderick.
Family and friends are invited to call on the family Wednesday, July 25th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Gately Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way, Provincetown. A Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am, Thursday July 26th at St Peters the Apostle Church, 11 Prince St, Provincetown. Burial, with military honors, will follow in St Peters Cemetery.
