Audrey Mavis Horn passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of July 18, 2018. She was 96 years old.
Mavis was born in Greenore, Co. Louth, Ireland in 1922. She attended schools in Greenore and the nearby town of Newry through high school. In her youth, Mavis had an affinity for Irish dancing. She competed locally and throughout Ireland. At age 16 she placed second in the All-Ireland dance competition. In her teens, she took up and excelled at golf; a sport she enjoyed years later with her husband, Flager into their later years.
Mavis met Carl Flager Horn in Belfast, Ireland in 1944 where he was working for Lockheed Overseas Corporation. They met on a blind date and spent the next six months dating until Flager returned to the United States at the end of his employment term. In 1947, Mavis joined Flager in Los Angeles where they were married. They were joined ten years later by daughter Jennifer.
Throughout her life, Mavis was surrounded with pets. She had a great love for animals, especially cats, and took in many strays and provided them with a loving home. These lucky animals got to experience the loving heart of this amazing women who took joy in their very presence.
Mavis was a 60 year member of the Saticoy Country Club and served as President of the Saticoy Women's Golf Association. She was also a lifetime member of the Assistance League of Ventura County and as part of her volunteer duties was in charge of the Bargain Box thrift store for several years when it was located in Oxnard.
Mavis lived a full life, rich with many friends and contemporaries. Her later years were spent playing bridge, gardening and traveling the world with her husband Flager.
Mavis had a great impact on those she leaves behind: daughter Jennifer and her husband Jonathan Wallace; granddaughter Jessica Nelson, her husband Wade and two great grandsons, Emmet and Kessler; and her nieces Sally Ghizzoni, Susan Bray, Ann Dolan and Linda Madzia. She was predeceased by her husband, the love of her life, Flager Horn, and her three older siblings.
