Obituary

Nancy (Gray) Schaeffer, of Mystic, died peacefully Tuesday, July 10th, 2018. She was 84.

Nancy lived most of her childhood in Riverside, CT. She was the daughter of Hiram Ligget Gray and Grace (Freeman) Gray.

She received her bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Mount Holyoke College, and Occupational Therapy training from Columbia University.

In 1958, she married Alan Pollock Schaeffer, also of Riverside. They raised two sons in Old Greenwich.

Nancy enjoyed a long and rewarding career as an Occupational Therapist, and worked with brain-injured patients at Norwich State Hospital.

Nancy and Alan were passionate about sailing. With sons launched, they embarked on the grand adventure of living aboard their 38’ sailboat for five years. In 1985 they sailed their home to Mystic, then moved ashore.

Nancy was very faith-filled and prayerful. She was highly involved with Bishop Seabury Episcopal Church, The Lydia Prayer Fellowship, and St. Patrick Church.

Nancy is survived by two sons, Alan of Mystic, and Peter of Quincy, FL; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and her older brother, William O. Gray of Norwalk, CT.

Family and friends are invited to attend a calling hour on Friday, July 20, from 9-10:00am at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated immediately following at 11:00am at St. Patrick Church, 32 East Main Street, Mystic. Services will conclude with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic. Reception at Mystic Seaport Museum.
