Obituary

Maurice J. Magnant, 88, passed away Tuesday July 10, 2018 following a brief illness. He was a lifelong resident of New Bedford. He was the son of the late Henry and Clarisse (Labbe) Magnant. Maurice served as a linesman in the United States Army during the Korean War. Upon his discharge, he went to work as a pressman at the Acushnet Company where he was employed until his retirement. He married his wife Janet M. (Corrie) Magnant with whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage this past February. Maurice, who was known by his family and friends as Mike, enjoyed camping and was known to pack his family into a VW Beetle and head off into the mountains of Vermont and up into Canada with Janet's feet in a dishwashing bin and his army duffel bags tied to both bumpers. Maurice and Janet continued to camp all summer long and especially enjoyed spending time with their friends at Forge Pond campground. This was an annual rite until two years ago when they decided to retire their trusty trailer.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Michael J. Magnant and his wife Denise of Portsmouth, NH, his daughter, Cheryl Johnson and her husband, Vincent of New Bedford; seven grandchildren, Jamie Johnson, Jared Johnson, Justin Johnson, Jessica Johnson, Jacob Johnson, David Magnant and Dana Magnant Pearl and six great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Jeanne Tetreault, Medora Galland, Eugene Magnant, and Irene Prudhomme.

His Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 20 at 11 AM at St. Mary's Church, Tarkiln Hill Road. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven, MA. Visiting hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
