Obituary



Andrew Yackovetsky, 87, of 116 Bel Aire Drive, Mystic, died November 21, 2005.

He was born in Stanhope, NJ on March 17, 1918 to Peter and Mary Yackovetsky. He was one of six sons, Gregory, Paul, Samuel, John, and Alexander. He married Eva Puschak on June 9, 1945.

Andrew joined to U.S. Coast Guard and spent the next 28 years serving his country. During World War II, her served aboard the cutter Storris and acted as a Russian interpreter on missions in the Bering Straits. Following his service upon retirement, he entered UCONN and graduated with a degree in Special Needs Education. He taught at Fitch Middle School for 11 years. Upon retiring from teaching, he spent many years enjoying his hobbies of woodworking, cabinetry, painting, and traveling.

He had two daughters, Mary Anne Gaskin (deceased) and Andrea Y. Zike of Mystic. He leaves four grandchildren, Andrew Sigler of Austin, TX, Kathryn Long of Southbourgh, MA and Amanda and Aaron Zike of Mystic.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family plans to place a memorial bench at Avery Point where he and his two daughters spent many years enjoying the ocean.
