Manuel P. "Manuta" Gomes, 85, of New Bedford died July 8, 2018 peacefully at home after a long courageous battle with cancer.
He was the husband of the late Geraldine A. (Pemberton) Gomes.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Joaquim P. and Mary F. (Freitas) Gomes, he lived in New Bedford most of his life.
Mr. Gomes was formerly employed down on the New Bedford waterfront as chief city fish weigher and lumper for many years until his retirement.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Association and the William Carney Elks Lodge.
Mr. Gomes enjoyed cooking, scratch tickets and playing cards.
Survivors include his son, Mark Gomes of Westport; 2 daughters, Erleen Duarte of New Bedford and Cheryl Gomes of Fall River; 2 sisters, Amelia Lopes of Connecticut and Shirley Pina of New Bedford; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Alan Gomes and Brian Gomes and the brother of the late Belford Gomes, Alice Poirier, John Gomes, Antone "Toy" Gomes, Albert Gomes, Delores Gomes and Dorothy Dolak.
His Funeral Service will be held Friday, July 13th at 11 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery Visiting hours will be Thursday, July 12th from 4-8 PM.
