Obituary

UPDATE: David J Machado, of Swansea, died after a year and a half long battle with ALS.
He is survived by his wife, Suzanne, son Ben, and Ben’s wife Adrienne,
granddaughters, Mae and Corinne, his sister Joan, and a brother. He is predeceased by his brother, Arthur,”Rigger” Machado.
Prior to his illness, David had a blessed life. Growing up in Fall River, he was the
son of Arthur and Aldena Machado. He was lucky in life as a talented athlete, a
winner at softball, bowling, billiards, and especially golf. In the early 60’s, David
served in the Army and again was lucky to be stationed in Germany, traveling
around Europe playing on the Army softball team, while the rest of his
squadron went to Vietnam. He worked at the Fall River Gas Co.for many years
and was lucky enough to spend much of his time playing golf with his boss.
David counted himself particularly lucky to have a son of whom he was
exceptionally proud. An avid golfer, he was a long time member of the Fall River
Country Club. He held the honor of achieving 8 holes in one, 3 of which occurred
on the same hole at FRCC within a month, a very rare occurrence in the gol?ng
world. Affectionately referred to by some as “ America’s guest” , David was a top
notch competitor, performing particularly well under pressure. As a result of this
talent, for years he was a regular guest for tournament play around New England
and Florida where he frequently ended up in the winner’s circle. David loved to
tell stories of his adventures to anyone who’d listen, the best one being dinner
with George and Barbara Bush. David also loved football and baseball. He was
an avid Red Sox fan. His passion began as a boy, listening to games on the radio
with his Dad. Over the years, he could always be found cheering
on the boys of summer. In his last few years David’s greatest joy came from
his granddaughter, Mae. She appears to have the same flair for story
telling and, as his illness slowed him down, she was his reason for smiling.
Lastly, David was lucky enough to be at home during the course of his illness,
nurtured and cared for by those that loved him. A very special credit and
appreciation go out to the VA and Beacon Hospice, without whom the wonderful
care that David received would not have been possible.

A Memorial golf tournament, raising money for ALS, will be held on at the Fall River
Country Club on July 26, 2019. Further information available from

David J Machado, of Swansea, passed away on July 2nd after a year and
half long battle with ALS. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne, son Benjamin,
daughter- in -law Adrienne and granddaughters, Mae and Corinne, his sister
Joan, and a brother. He is predeceased by his brother, Arthur,”Rigger” Machado.
Prior to his illness, David had a blessed life. Growing up in Fall River, he
was the son of Arthur and Aldena Machado. He was lucky in life as a talented
athlete, a winner at softball, bowling, billiards, and especially golf. In the early
60’s, David served in the Army and again was lucky to be stationed in Germany,
traveling around Europe playing on the battalion softball team. He worked at the
Fall River Gas Co. for many years and was lucky enough to spend much of his
time there playing golf with his boss. David counted himself particularly lucky to
have a son whom, for a number of reasons, he was exceptionally proud.
An avid golfer for the past 50 years, he was a long time member of the Fall
River Country Club. He held the honor of achieving 8 holes in one, 3 of which
occurred on the same hole at FRCC within 3 weeks of each other, a very rare
occurrence in the golfing world. Affectionately referred to by some as “ America’s
guest” , David was a top notch competitor, performing particularly well under
pressure. As a result of this talent, for years he was a regular guest for
tournament play at clubs around New England and Florida where he frequently
ended up in the winner’s circle. David loved to tell stories of his adventures to
anyone who’d listen, the best one being dinner with George and Barbara Bush,
where Barbara held his hand.

David also loved football and baseball. Like so many New Englanders, he
was an avid Red Sox fan. His passion began as a boy, listening to games on the
radio with his Dad. As the seasons past, he could be found in front of the TV from
April to October.

But in the last few years, David’s greatest joy came from being with his
granddaughter, Mae. She appears to have the same flair for story telling and, as
his illness slowed him down, she was his reason for smiling.

Lastly, David was lucky enough to be at home during the course of his
illness, nurtured and cared for by those that loved him. A very special credit and
appreciation go out to Cory and Bethany, aides provided by the VA and Beacon
Hospice, without whom the wonderful care that David received would not have
been possible.

Wednesday, July11th, from 4-6 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday,
July 12th at Holy Name Church, Fall River Ma at 10AM.
