Staff Sergeant Joseph Lenard Murphy, U. S. Army, age 35, departed this life on July 2, 2018 at Fort Jackson, SC.
SSG Murphy was born on April 7, 1983 in Jacksonville, FL and grew up in Callahan, FL. He had been stationed at Fort Jackson for the past three years.
He served 14 years with the Army. He was currently serving as a compliance officer with Bravo Company, Headquarters Battalion. His infantry deployments included: 1 tour in Iraq, 2 tours in Afghanistan and 2 tours in South Korea.
SSG Murphy enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors. He liked to work out in the gym
and build things. He was a master carpenter and a fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
He was preceded in death by his father, the late Franklin D. Murphy, Sr. who passed in 2009 and a sister, Cynthia Mary Reese who passed on in 2007.
SSG Murphy leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Janie Murphy of Columbia, SC; two sons, Joseph Lenard Murphy, Jr. and Jerome Michael Murphy, both of Seoul, South Korea; his mother, Mrs. Velma Lee Murphy of Callahan, FL; three brothers, Reginald Murphy (Vanessa) of Jacksonville, FL, Franklin D. Murphy, Jr. of Atlanta, GA and Joshua A. Murphy of Brooklyn, NY; three sisters, Cheryl Murphy Adams(Ricky) of Brunswick, GA, Cherisa L. Murphy of Jacksonville, FL and Rolanda S. Murphy, also of Jacksonville; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 12 at 11:00 a.m., at Callahan First Baptist Church, located at 45090 Green Avenue, with Rev. Lynn Hyatt officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow at the Jacksonville National Cemetery. Following the interment, there will be a repass at Callahan First Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at the visitation from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday July 11th at the Green Pine Funeral Home, 96281 Green Pine Road in Yulee, FL.
