Helen Gordon (also lovingly known as Ella, Mom and Mimi) passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2018.
Helen was born in the village of Walkerburn, in the Boarders of Scotland on December 17, 1921. She arrived in the US shortly after her first birthday and was raised in Englewood, New Jersey. She married the love of her life, William John Gordon II, a Royal Navy Officer during WWII. In September 1944, when her first born son was just 3 months old, Helen departed for Liverpool, England on a convoy which was chased by submarines throughout the crossing. She then traveled to London, to depart for the Highlands to spend the remaining War Years with her husband's family in Keith, Scotland. Staying in Scotland during the War allowed more frequent visits with her Navy husband. Helen reveled in telling her family and friends of these years, especially the sound of "Buzz Bombs" while she was in London. She returned to the US in 1946 to reside in Tenafly, New Jersey. She moved to New England in 1976 and has lived in Whitman for the past 30 years.
She passed away on Saturday, June 23, with family at her side and with the loving care of St. Joseph’s Manor in Brockton, MA, exactly 54 years to the day after her loving husband’s passing.
Helen was predeceased by her son William John Gordon III of Texas, and her brothers Robert and Archie MacDougall of New Jersey.
Helen is survived by her daughter Sandra Coffey of Whitman, son James Gordon and his wife Virginia of Middleboro, and daughter-in-law Maureen of Texas. Granddaughters Cynthia Keyes, Leslie Gomes, Heather Young and grandson Matthew Gordon, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and extended family both here and abroad. Love of family and friends was her hallmark.
A Service of Remembrance will be held Saturday August 11 from 1:00-4:00PM in the Club Room at Oak Point, 200 Oak Point, Middleboro, MA 02346.
