Carole P. Doig
Carole Emily (Peterson) Doig, 83, of Penacook, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on June 12th, 2018 after a brief illness. She was loved, she will be missed.
Carole was born on November 26th, 1934 to Elsie and Hilmer Peterson, and grew up in Astoria, Queens, NY and then New Hyde Park on Long Island. She studied liberal arts, achieved Honor Society and served on Student Council. Through the Young People’s Society at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, she met lifelong friends Bob and Irene, Jean, and Audrey, and her husband, John Sellars Doig. Faith, family, friends, education, and service to others are what she valued throughout her life.
Carole was a devoted wife to John S. Doig [USAF, USMC, Korean War veteran], and a loving mother of James Ian and Phyllis Ann Doig. She worked hard to ensure that her children had every opportunity in life. Without her efforts, their achievements would not have been possible. Carole gave so much of her time and energy, yet found time to earn a college degree from State University of New York, hold a variety of positions in sales and publication at the local newspaper, and independently publish word puzzles and crosswords that she designed.
After the loss of her husband John in 1991, Carole retired and moved to New Hampshire to be near family. There, she made new friends and volunteered in service to the community. She supported Girls Inc., Friends of Forgotten Children, the Penacook Senior Center, and the public library system. At one time she proposed ideas for saving the Penacook branch library, earning a handwritten thank you note from a state representative at the House of Representatives of New Hampshire.
Carole was a lifelong learner and an avid reader -- especially books by Doris Kearns Goodwin, whom she had the distinct pleasure of meeting at an event in Concord, MA. She also loved the news industry, regularly reading local online newspapers from around the US. Having once worked as Legal Department secretary at CBS News in Manhattan, she was thrilled when Bob Schieffer of CBS replied to a request for a personalized copy of his book This Just In; he included a kind note and ensured that it arrived on time for her 75th birthday.
Carole is survived by her son James, his wife Jennifer and their daughter Kaitlin; her daughter Phyllis; her brother David Peterson; Roycelyn Barfield Peterson; their children Derek and Erica; her cousins Kay and John; her sisters-in-law Audrey and Mae and cousins Joan and Bob.
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will take place at 10:15am on Saturday, June 30th at Newton Presbyterian Church, 75 Vernon Street in Newton, Massachusetts, 02458. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your local senior center, public library, or children’s charities such as Girls, Inc.
