TEWKSBURY - Eugene A. “Gene” Mortensen, age 91, a WWII Navy Veteran and resident of the Carnation Drive housing community, died peacefully early Tuesday morning, June 19, at Care One at Wilmington after a brief period of declining health. He was the beloved husband of M. Helen (O’Leary) Mortensen who died in 1979.
He was born in Somerville, in October 1926, a son of the late Carl and Esther (Haskell) Mortensen, and had lived on Grasshopper Lane in Tewksbury most of his adult life. His passion was bowling and he avidly participated in leagues in the Tewksbury area.
Gene was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Navy during WWII and was honorably discharged as a Yeoman 3rd Class.
He retired from St. Johnsbury trucking company, where he had worked as a rate clerk and merchandise inspector.
He is survived by a brother Carl Mortensen and his wife Marjorie of Holyoke; a sister, Priscilla Jones and her husband Earl of Selbyville, DE; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will be received from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, in the Tewksbury Funeral Home, corner of 1 Dewey and 975 Main Sts. (Rte. 38) TEWKSBURY CENTER, Ph. (800 in MA or 978) 851 2950. His Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial with Navy Honors will be in Tewksbury Cemetery.
