Obituary

George Alvin Berg Jr., 88, of Norwich and formerly of Mystic died Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at Orchard Grove Specialty Care in Uncasville. He was born on January 20, 1930 in Mystic, the son of George A. Berg Sr. and Doris Mae (Gould) Berg. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the US Navy and proudly served for nearly 5 years being honorably discharged in 1951. He then worked for 25 years in the family business as a commercial fisherman on one of the last wooden fishing vessels, the “Old Mystic” out of Stonington Borough. Upon retirement from fishing, he worked for several years as a painter at the Mystic Seaport Museum.

He was happily married to his beloved wife, Helen Mary (Klotz) Berg for 62 years. She predeceased him in 2011.

George is survived by his three children and their families: son Richard R. Berg and his late wife Sue and grandchildren David, Kari, and Kyle Berg; son Ronald D. Berg and his wife Jeanne H. Berg and grandchildren Erica Berg, Alyssa Berg and Ryan Caffaro; and daughter Marlane Sullivan and her husband Keith Sullivan and grandson Dale Sullivan. He is survived by his sister Hazel Hodgeman and predeceased by his brother Robert Berg.

His family will greet relatives and friends on Tuesday, June 19 from 10 to 11:00am at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. A Funeral Service will follow at 11:00am at the funeral home. Services will conclude with burial at 12:30pm with full military honors in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic.
A reception will immediately follow at the Groton Bible Chapel, 66 Toll Gate Road, Groton, CT 06340.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Groton Bible Chapel.
