WELLS – Allen L. Bell, age 81, passed away on June 6, 2018, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, Maine from COPD and Alzheimer’s disease. Allen was born in Bangor, Maine on April 13, 1937, the son of the late C. Allen Bell and Trenna Mabel (Whitney) Bell. Allen graduated from Jackson High School in Michigan in 1955. He went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Zoology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and a Ph.D. in Anatomy from Syracuse University in NY. Allen was an expert in electron microscopy, human anatomy, and histology, and was a gifted photographer. He ran the EM lab and taught anatomy and histology for 34 years at the University of New England College of Medicine in Biddeford, Maine, where he retired as a tenured full professor. Allen was also a skilled photographer, an amateur astronomer, and an excellent cook. As a professor, he was known for including humor in his lectures and was well-liked by his students and colleagues.
Allen is survived by his beloved wife Patience (Tracy) Bell, his sister Catherine (Bell) King, daughter Shari Bell, son-in-law Eric Richardson, grandchild Lily Richardson, and ex wife and mother of his daughters. He is pre-deceased by his daughter, Christy Bell, who died in 1982.
The celebration will be on Friday, July 27, 2018 from 4:00 - 6:00 PM at the Jack S. Ketchum Library Art Gallery on the campus of the University of New England, 11 Hills Beach Road, Biddeford, Maine. All who knew Allen are invited to attend.
