Sylvia A. Kanal (Major) passed away at her home in Natick, MA on May 23, 2018.
She is survived by her son and two daughters, Bashu Kanal and his wife Brooke, Anita Kratzsch and her husband Dale, and Mala Gillin and her husband Christopher.
She is also survived by her six grandchildren: Sadhya Kanal, Sophie and Lauren Kratzsch, and Livee, Helena, and Alexander Gillin.
Sylvia was born to Ilona and Sandor Major, of Hungary, on December 26, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan. She grew up in River Rouge.
She attended the University of Michigan where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and met her beloved husband Madhoo Kanal; a PhD recipient in Physics. They married on August 13, 1960. Sylvia was a violinist with the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra. Recently she earned her Master’s degree in Software Engineering from Brandeis University.
She was quite the accomplished piano player, and what a joy it was to gather around the piano and sing while she played. An avid reader only mildly describes her love of reading, particularly historical fiction and fantasy. She was an animal lover and mom to many pups and one cat throughout her years. She also very much enjoyed attending her water aerobics classes with all of her caring Aquafit friends.
She was the most loving, generous, and supportive mother and friend. She was the best listener and the smartest lady. We will miss her dearly.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 31, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at the John Everett & Sons Funeral home located at 4 Park Street, Natick, MA 01760. The funeral will be held on Friday, June 1 at 10:00 AM at St. Linus Church 119 Hartford Street, Natick, MA 01760.
