Asilene Hurst Massey, 95, passed away Monday, May 21, 2018, at the Rehabilitation Center of South Georgia in Tifton. Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2018, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals with Charlotte Hurst giving a eulogy. Mrs. Massey will be laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Born September 2, 1922 in Colquitt County, she was the daughter of the late Oscar T. Hurst and Virginia Varnadoe Hurst. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ollie Louise Massey, to whom she was married for 57 years. They were married on December 22, 1941 and he died on March 24, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her only child, Charles Ray Massey; three brothers and their wives; a niece and a nephew. She was the last member of her immediate family.
She was a resident of Tift County since 1945 and was retired from Belk Hudson Company. Before working for Belk Hudson, she was a seamstress with Kulbersh’s and many other department stores in Tifton. She also had her own business for 13 years and was employed as a nurse for six years. She enjoyed vacationing and sight-seeing in Florida.
Mrs. Massey was a long-time member of Northside Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Encouragers Sunday School Class and the Ann Hammonds Sunday School Class. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #21 and past President of the Golden Age Club, the Crepe Myrtle Garden Club and the Garden Gate Garden Club.
Mrs. Massey is survived by three nieces, Charlotte Hurst, Faye Scarbrough and Gertrude Davis, all of Doerun; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
