Worcester – Claire M. (Johnson) Avis, 79, formerly of 6 Dolan Street, died Monday, November 14, 2005.
Her husband of nearly 50 years, Walter J. Avis, Sr., died June 21, 1991. She leaves her children, Walter J. “Jack” Avis and his wife Patricia, Richard M. Avis and his wife Sharon, all of Shrewsbury, Kathleen M. Lauze and her husband Dennis of Rutland, Patricia G. Avis, with whom she made her home for the last five years in Rutland, and Stephen M. Avis of Worcester; eight grandchildren, Matthew, Callie, Michael, and Elizabeth Avis, Stephen Jr. and Brian Avis, Meghan S. Lauze and Sam John Avis; Her granddaughter, Jacqueline Avis died before her. She also leaves a sister, Edith Bergenholtz and her husband Earl of Grafton; nieces & nephews. Claire was born on May 21, 1926, daughter of the late George and Mary “Mae” (Fanning) Johnson and graduated from South High School.
Mrs. Avis worked as a home health aide for the Visiting Nurse’s Association for many years. Prior to this she worked at the former Vernon Drug Store on Burncoat Street where she was well known and loved by many in the neighborhood.
The Funeral will be held Friday, November 18, from The CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle Street, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 23 Fales Street. Interment will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
