Obituary


Jurgis Stuopis, 82, of Sharon, MA passed away Saturday May 12, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family after a long illness.

He was born in Taurage, Lithuania, the son of Jurgis Stuopis and Konstancija Konkuleviciute. He immigrated to Chicago as a refugee in 1949 with his mother and older sister Regina, where he attended high school and later graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology with a degree in civil engineering. In 1959 he married Roma Morkunas. He began his career with H.W. Lochner Inc., and they had two sons, Tomas, and Paul. The family relocated to Sharon, MA in 1966. Jurgis had a 50+ year career with H.W. Lochner, retiring as senior vice president and regional manager in 2007. During his career, he directed many important planning and design assignments in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Indiana, Florida and New Mexico, including coming in on time and under budget for key components of the Central Artery North Area project.

Jurgis was an avid traveler who visited all 50 states, and all continents except Antarctica. His travels took him to 89 countries, and included 21 river cruises, as well as numerous ocean cruises. He took great joy in sharing his travels with family and friends through photographs and albums. He shared his love of travel with his family, frequently traveling with them on wonderful trips filled with memories for all. He also cherished reading and was frequently found reading novels and books from all genres. Jurgis remained devoted to his native Lithuania and supported numerous Lithuanian-American organizations in the greater Boston area including Lithuanian Children’s Relief, St. Peter’s Lithuanian Catholic Church in South Boston, Camp Neringa in Brattleboro, Vermont, the Boston Lithuanian School, and the Lithuanian Scouts Association.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Roma, his son Tomas, wife Rita, and granddaughter Kristina of Canton, MA; grandson Vytas and his fiancé Stefanie Field of Westfield, NJ; son Paul, wife Cecilia, granddaughters Isabella and Katerina, and grandson Tomas of Amherst, NH; nieces Vita Muklewicz, Maria Stonikas, and Angela Klarin, and nephew Vitas Kazlauskas and their families. He is predeceased by his parents, and his sister Regina Kazlauskas and her husband Vytautas.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 16 from 10-11:00 AM at St. Peter Lithuanian Catholic Church in South Boston, immediately followed by the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be private at a later date.
