Ellen L. Thompson, 78

Ellen L. (Hagglund) Thompson, age 78, of Norton, formerly of Mansfield, passed away peacefully, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, May 10, 2018. She was the beloved wife of Samuel F. Thompson, to whom she was wed on July 17, 1965.

Born in Boston, MA on June 18, 1939, she was a loving daughter of the late Luther and Gertrude (Scott) Hagglund.

Ellen grew up in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston and was a 1957 graduate of Jeremiah E. Burke High School. Prior to retiring, she had been employed as an administrative secretary for twenty-five years at the former Mass Glass Co. in Mansfield.

A resident of Norton for the past fourteen years, Mrs. Thompson had previously resided in Mansfield. She was a member of the Boston Chapter of the 26th Yankee Infantry Division, a former life member of ladies auxiliary of the Mansfield American Legion and a former life member and past president of the Mansfield Chapter DAV.

A communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Norton, Ellen was a supporting wife, a proud mother and loved spending time with her treasured grandchildren. Her hobbies included sewing, crossword puzzles and being an avid reader.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her devoted sons Mark R. Thompson and his wife Gina of Mansfield, Michael J. Thompson of Peabody, and Samuel F. Thompson, Jr. and his wife Lori of Wrentham. She was the dear sister of Linda Hagglund of Norton. She was the cherished grandmother of Alex, Ryan, Natalie, Aaron and Sarah, and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Her funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 16th at 10:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 1 Power St., Norton. Burial will follow at the Timothy Plain Cemetery in Norton.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, May 15th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ellen’s memory may be made to New England Center for Homeless Veterans, 17 Court St., Boston, MA 02108.
