Adrienne (Van Gorp) Sylvia, 96, of New Bedford passed away Sunday May 6, 2018 after a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late Anthony P. Sylvia, Jr.
Born in Antwerp, Belgium, she was the daughter of the late August and Maria (Eykens) Van Gorp. During World War II, she met a young soldier serving in the U.S. Army Medical Division who had participated in the Battle of the Bulge. The couple then married and returned to his home city of New Bedford where she resided for the rest of her life.
She is survived by her children, Karyn Ponte and Glenn P. Sylvia and his wife Erin, all of New Bedford; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
A private funeral service was held on Tuesday morning at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
