Michael C. Zajac, 78, of New Bedford died April 27, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Ann G. (Gorka) Zajac, to whom he was completely devoted for over 56 years.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Henry and Janet (Kennedy) Zajac, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Zajac was a communicant of St. Julie Billiart Church and was a member of the choir.
He was formerly employed as comptroller for the Center for Health and Human Services for many years until his retirement.
Mr. Zajac was a loving devoted husband, father and grandfather and was very proud to become a great-grandfather. Mike had a genuine interest and love for people with a gift for making them feel at ease. He enjoyed tennis with many friends.
Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, Atty. Mark Zajac and his wife Laura Olson of New Bedford and Joseph Zajac and his wife Kerry of East Freetown; 2 daughters, Mary Jane Couillard and her husband Rick of Old Orchard Beach, ME and Martha Schwartz of Dartmouth; 3 brothers, Henry Zajac of Mattapoisett, Mortimer Zajac of Mashpee and Florida and Peter Zajac of New Bedford; 2 sisters, Rosemary Bowman of Mattapoisett and Janet Shartle of Fairhaven; 10 grandchildren, Elizabeth Ventura, Matthew Couillard, Samantha Couillard, Cara Zajac, Michael Zajac, Kevin Zajac, Colleen Zajac, Daniel Zajac, Hannah Schwartz and William Schwartz; a great-granddaughter, Rosemary Ventura; and several nieces and nephews.
His Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, May 7th at 10 AM in St. Julie Billiart Church. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, May 6th from 2-5 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 East Ohio St., Suite 500, Chicago, IL 60611.
