Doris Nicholas passed away peacefully on April 26, 2018, at the age of 90. She was born in Maspeth, New York in 1928, and enjoyed her childhood on Long Island.
She married John W. “Jack” Nicholas in 1946. By 1955, children Jay and Beth had joined the family.
Jack was employed by Grumman Aircraft, so the Nicholas family moved from New York to various military bases in Texas, Alabama, and finally California. While at Fort Rucker in Alabama, Doris instructed military student pilots on the use of flight instruments. At Fort Rucker, she also took up horseback riding, and developed a passion for horses that lasted the rest of her life.
When the Nicholas family moved to Ojai in 1972, Doris became interested in real estate and earned a broker’s license. She was a Realtor in Ventura County for over 30 years, and was affiliated with several real estate offices during that time, including California Oaks, Property Shoppe, Coldwell Banker, and Cosby Tipton.
Doris loved her family and friends and was a gifted homemaker and hostess. She also had an adventuresome spirit, enjoying horseback riding, boating and traveling. She will be greatly missed.
Doris was pre-deceased by her daughter, Beth, and is survived by her son, Jay, daughter-in-law Janis, their children, Amy and Travis, and by Beth’s son, Steven. The family sends a special thank-you to The Gables of Ojai, Assisted Health Care Hospice, and Dr. and Mrs. Raymond P. Sims.
Family and friends are invited to visiting hours to be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 757 E. Main St., Ventura. Funeral services officiated by the Rev. Susan Bek will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 3290 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. Interment will immediately follow in Santa Barbara Cemetery, 901 Channel Drive, Montecito. Donations may be made to the animal charity of your choice.
