Obituary

Alfred G. Bettencourt, 90, of Westport, peacefully passed away at home on Monday, April 23, 2018, surrounded by the love and care of his family. He was the husband of Faith D. (Norcross) Bettencourt and the late Claire A. (Dagesse) Bettencourt.

Mr. Bettencourt was born in Dartmouth, son of the late Manuel J. and Emily (Andrews) Bettencourt, and had been a longtime resident of Westport. He was the owner/operator of A.G. Bettencourt, Inc. of Westport since 1958, running the fuel and mulch business alongside his son Andrew until his late 80s. A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he proudly served his country in the U. S. Army. He was a Past Grand Knight and Past Faithful Navigator of the Knights of Columbus, Chapter 4333, formerly in Westport. He loved trucks, trips to Florida each winter with his camper in tow, country dancing, carousel horses, fairs, and his cats Callie, Smudgy and Mr. Bojangles. He will forever be remembered for his home-baked apple pies, his gentle yet fighting spirit, and the love and laughter that could always be found in his home and in his heart.

Survivors along with his wife include his son: Andrew G. Bettencourt and his wife Patricia of Westport; his 2 daughters: Jo-Ann M. Bettencourt and her husband Brian Pragana of Westport, and Janice A. Bettencourt and her husband Robert Carreiro of Dartmouth; a stepson: Scott A. Ulewicz and his wife Jacqueline of New Bedford; a brother: John Bettencourt of Dartmouth; a sister: Genevieve Simoes of Westport; grandchildren Bobby, Krysten, Jamie, Jocelyn, Aja, Allen, Nicolas, Sarah and Ariel; great-grandchildren Kya, Kade, Phoenix and Grayson; and many treasured nieces and nephews.

He was the father of the late Alan G. Bettencourt; stepfather of the late Michael J. Ulewicz; and brother of the late Manuel J. Bettencourt, Irene S. Branco and Emily B. Duarte.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial to which relatives and friends are invited will be Friday, April 27, 2018, at St. John the Baptist Church, Westport, at 10 a.m.

Calling hours will be 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at Potter Funeral Home.

Interment will be private.
