Obituary

On April 18, William Frederick "Bill" Nispel, age 73, of Tewksbury, formerly of Everett and Malden, passed away due to complications of Pulmonary Fibrosis. The disease has a life-expectancy of three to five years. He lived seven years after his diagnosis, mostly due to excellent professional medical attention and the superb and loving care of his wife.

In 1967, Bill was honorably discharged from the Army after receiving the National Defense Service Medal.

Bill spent his working years as a machinist, 37 of those years at MIT where he worked on such notable projects as the search for Black Holes at Bates Linear Accelerator, a tool for the International Space Station, and with a team that won a Nobel Prize in Physics.

He spent several decades as a volunteer EMT at the Malden Emergency Center. He also worked on several ambulance services. We’ll never know how many lives he saved.

His pride and joy were “his girls”: his daughter, his nieces, and his grand-daughter. He was thrilled that his youngest niece and grand-daughter just got engaged. He said in the hospital that he was so happy because he knew his girls were happy.

Bill and his wife Mary Jo celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on September 2, 2017 in a combined celebration with the wedding of their daughter and her husband.

Bill was loved by all who knew him. Even the nurses caring for him at the end said “Thank you for sharing him with us.”

At the end, Bill was surrounded by all of his family. He is the beloved husband of Mary Jo (Bichlmeier); son of the late Herbert and Helen (Fleming) Nispel; father of Marni Nispel and her husband Tim Curran, grandfather ("G'Pa") of Kyri Allison and her fiancé Nick Maher; brother of Judith (Nispel) and her husband Doctor John J. Burke, Jr.; brother-in-law of Joan (Bichlmeier) and her husband Randy Meinke; uncle of Michaela Burke and her new fiancé Jeff Becker; uncle of Kristin (Burke) Taylor and her husband Zach; and great-uncle of Chase Taylor.
