John L. Lignar, age 84, a long time resident of Chicopee, MA, passed away peacefully in the loving arms of his family at home on Sunday, April 15, 2018. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Lignar (nee Ann Ziemba). John was born in Plymouth, PA, to the late Frank and Catherine (Trela) Lignar. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Darlene Lignar of Chicopee, Karen Lignar of Chicopee, Janice Grise and her husband, James Grise, John M. Lignar of Chicopee and, Kenneth Lignar and his wife, Cindy Lignar, of Chester, CT, and his godchildren, Theresa Niemiec, Daniel Bannish and Nicholas Breton, his sisters and brother, Helen Lignar, Frances Niemiec, Irene Bannish and Joseph Lignar. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Christopher Jacques, Amanda Weinberg, Catherine Welch, Angela Belz, Michael Alan Lignar, Meagan Lignar, and survived by his great grandchildren, Logan, Jacquelyn, Kaiden, Calista, Rex, Phoenix, Angelina, Sadie, and predeceased by Adrina Belz, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A graduate of Cathedral High School, John entered the US Army and was stationed in KY and GA. Upon receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Army as a Corporal, he returned to MA to be with his growing family, where he studied at a trade school to become a Master Electrician until his retirement. He was a life long member of BPOE #1849 and Captain (Retired) of the Chicopee Specials (Auxiliary) Police. Calling hours will be held at the Grise Funeral Home, 280 Springfield St, Chicopee, on Tuesday, April 24th, from 9:30 – 11:30 A.M. A Prayer service will start at 11:30 A.M. Following services, John will be interred at the Veterans Cemetery in Agawam, MA, with his wife, Nancy.
