Obituary

Richard "Rick" James Marks, 56, of Winchester passed peacefully on April 11 surrounded by his family. When Rick was diagnosed with ALS 18 months ago, he faced the diagnosis with the same determination that defined his life. He organized Rick’s Hike for ALS, which has so far raised over $150,000 towards ALS research and care. Rick’s wish was to contribute to ongoing ALS research and help other families living with the disease. Forty-five people hiked 128 miles of the Appalachian Trail with Rick over the summer of 2017, while others hiked an additional 275 miles. The hike continues in Rick’s memory with satellite treks across the country working toward a cure.
Beloved by many, Rick was cherished for his ever-present compassion and willingness to help whoever was in need. A lifelong outdoorsman, Rick loved to ski, hike, run, and walk (20,000 steps a day). He served as a Boy Scout leader for many years and was an active member of Parish of the Epiphany in Winchester, where he served as Treasurer. In September 2017, Rick retired after 30 years at Bank of America where he worked in private wealth management. He was a proud graduate of Texas Tech University and received his MBA from Boston University. A native Texan, Rick was known for his love of country music and his well-worn cowboy boots.
Rick was devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Eileen, and sons Henry and Philip of Winchester; his mother Greta Marks of Lubbock, TX; his sister Christi Johnson and her husband Bill Johnson of Austin, TX; his sister Brenda Marks and her partner Paul Howes of Dallas, TX; and his niece Ashley Kelm of Austin, TX. He was preceded in death by his father James N. Marks, Jr., grandparents Henry and Grace Heck, James N. and Gladys Marks, and nephew Jason Kelm.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 14th at 2:00 pm at Parish of the Epiphany, 70 Church St., Winchester, MA. A reception will follow at the church hall. The family invites guests to stay afterward for a celebratory BBQ.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to ALS ONE via www.rickshikeforals.org or the Parish of the Epiphany Accessibility Fund at 70 Church St., Winchester, MA 01890.
