James Joseph "Jim" GUIOD, of Dover, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at home on April 8, 2018 with his beloved wife Linda at his side. He was 76 years old. Son of Joseph Guiod, Jr and Grace Guiod (née O’Connell) of Westwood, Massachusetts, Jim was the middle child of three, with older sister, the late Grace Kathleen Guiod, and younger brother, Robert Daniel Guiod.
After graduating from Westwood High School in 1959, Jim earned Bachelor and Masters degrees in Business Administration from Northeastern University. After his undergraduate work, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and ordered to Georgia. In a stroke of luck, he negotiated a change in his orders to Fairbanks, Alaska. Always the adventurer, Jim turned the necessary trip to Alaska into an excursion by purchasing a new Rambler American station wagon and outfitting it for the Alaskan winter. Thus equipped, Jim then drove across the U.S., Canada, and deep into Alaska, arriving in Fairbanks in the middle of winter. After a year, curious about the realities of war, Jim requested a transfer to Vietnam, where he became the commanding officer of a communications company with platoons in both Pleiku and Kontum. His service in connection with his convoys between those two cities led to his being awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. In less than three years, Jim rose to the rank of Captain.
During an Army “rest and relaxation” week in Tokyo, Jim discovered his passion for photography, acquiring an abundance of camera equipment. His family happily received a flood of photographs and slides sent home from Vietnam. When Jim returned stateside he continued to pursue his love of photography becoming not only the official family photographer, but also an accomplished nature photographer producing stunning award winning shots. Jim’s photography fills the homes of many who knew him. Family will remember him as “Principle Photographer” for holiday gatherings, always able to capture the fun and warmth of being around him.
Jim had the good fortune to live in the same Boston apartment building as Linda Rose Barbero, who later became his wife on June 26, 1971.Together Jim and Linda lived in many places along the East Coast acquiring many friends along the way as Jim moved up his career ladder with Airborne Express. After 30 years at Airborne, he retired as Vice President of Sales.
A lover of nature, Jim always found time for outdoor pursuits, enjoying fishing, hiking, and drawing landscapes and wildlife particularly in his beloved New Hampshire, where he and his wife spent over 30 years enjoying vacations and long weekends. There they held “Camp Guiod” every summer for family and friends.
Jim is survived by his loving wife Linda, his brother Robert and wife Nancy Guiod of Dover; their daughters Jennifer, Kelly and Meredith Guiod; his brother-in-law Paul Barbero and wife Ann of Bradenton, Florida; their daughter Staci Georgiou and her husband Gary; and their children Emily and Thomas of Baltimore, Maryland, as well as many cousins and two uncles: Albert Guiod and wife Mary; and Daniel Guiod.
