Obituary

Carl Flager Horn passed away peacefully on April 1, 2018. His memory will be forever carried in the loving hearts of his family. A finer, more compassionate and loving husband and father would be hard to find. Flager lived his life in service to his clients, his community and his family. He leaves this world better for the quiet power of his devotion to friends and family, as a role model in honesty, and in the dignity of a life lived with grace.
Flager was born December 3, 1919 in Miles City, Montana. He moved with his parents, Marie and Carl, to Ventura in 1924. His sister, Shirley Ruth was born soon after, increasing their family to four. After attending schools in Ventura through Ventura College, he transferred to the University of California at Berkeley. One year later, Flager took a job with the Lockheed Overseas Corporation, spending two years in Ireland. He then served in the US Navy for two years near the end of World War II.
In 1947 he married the love of his life, his wife Mavis Forsythe, an Irish beauty he had met in Ireland a few years before. They celebrated 70 years of marriage together last year.
Flager graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1947. He obtained his certificate as a Certified Public Accountant two years later, and after working five years in Los Angeles for a national accounting firm, opened his own practice in Oxnard in 1952. Over the years this practice grew to a five partner firm and in 1972 merged with the national accounting firm Haskins & Sells where he became a partner. He retired in 1984.
In his leisure time, Flager loved to garden and passed this love of gardening onto his daughter, Jennifer. In his younger days he loved swimming in the ocean and took particular pleasure in visiting Catalina Island over many summers for golfing, hiking and snorkeling. Flager was a strong believer in exercise and took daily walks long before the rest of the world became interested in this type of activity. Golf was also one of his passions; he was a 60-year member of Saticoy County Club. In his later years, gin rummy and bridge took the place of golf.
Flager was active in professional affairs having served as Chairman of many business committees. Notably he was President of the Channel Counties chapter of the California Society of CPAs and a member of the State Board of this organization.
Also involved in civic affairs, he was a member of the Oxnard Kiwanis Club for over thirty years where he served as President. He was active in the Oxnard Chamber of Commerce where he served three years on the Board of Directors as Chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee and then served ten successive presidents in this capacity as an Ex-Officio member of the Board. He also served as a Board member of the Easter Seal Society of Ventura County for twenty seven years, a member of the Board of Directors of the Oxnard Community Hospital and was a Board Member of the Swift Memorial Health Care Foundation.
Flager is survived by his wife Mavis, daughter Jennifer and son-in- law Jonathan Wallace, granddaughter Jessica Nelson and husband Wade and two great grandsons, and nieces Sally Ghizzoni and Susan Bray.
As per his wishes, no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to either one of his favorite charities, the Oxnard Rescue Mission or the Salvation Army, or a charity of your choice.
