Obituary

Maria Eduarda (Borges) Melo, 88 years old, of Somerville, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. She was the devoted wife of Leonardo De Melo for 63 years.

Born and raised in St. Michael, Azores, Eduarda came to America in 1975 and resided in Somerville for many years. She worked as a seamstress at Priscilla Bridal until her retirement.

Eduarda was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. She was also very well known for her "malassadas" (Portuguese fried dough). She was a woman of great faith who prayed the rosary every day. She was a member of the Charismatic Group and Legion of Mary at Saint Anthony's Church in Cambridge.

What brought her the most joy in her life were family gatherings and being in the company of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her.

Eduarda is survived by her children; Estrela Andre and her husband John of Vancouver, BC; Ana Melo and her husband Tom Platz of Tewksbury; Jose Melo and his wife Natalie of Stoughton; and the late Maria Carmen Silva. Mother in law of John Silva of West Bridgewater and his wife Ana. She was the beloved grandmother of Joao Paul and Sonia Cordeiro, Christine Hrenko and her husband Matthew, Jennifer Bradford and her husband William, Jessica Croatti and her husband Michael, Ashley Silva Perry and her husband Jason, Catherine and Jacqueline Andre; Great-grandmother of Liam, Madison, and Abigail Bradford; Peyton, Riley, and Austin Hrenko; and Cayson Croatti. The dear sister of Jose Borges and his wife Estrela of Cambridge, Jacinto Borges of Portugal, Joao Borges and his wife Goretti of Portugal, Francisco Borges and his wife Maria dos Anjos of Canada, Joana Machado and her husband Jose of Somerville, Fatima Gomez and her husband Julio of Swampscott and the late Angelo Borges, Antonio Jr. Borges and Cremilde Soares do Rego. Also, the loving aunt of many nieces and nephews.

Visiting Hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street, (Rte. 123) Brockton, Tuesday March 27, from 4-8pm. The funeral procession will gather at the funeral home Wednesday March 28, at 10:30am for a Funeral Mass in Immaculate Conception Church, 122 Canton St., Stoughton at 11:30am. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton. Donations in Eduarda’s name may be made to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan St., Ste B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
