Obituary

Susan Jane Seymour, of Wrentham, died March 10, 2018 after a long illness, in the company of her husband and a dear family friend. Born in Sacramento CA, the only and beloved daughter of Arthur McArthur Seymour and Nina Jordan Seymour. She graduated from Sacramento State College and pursued a clerical and administrative career in university settings, first at the University of California at Davis, then at the University of Montana, and finally as Executive Assistant to the Director at Harvard University Press. She also worked briefly in the Governor's Office in California, where she was known among Ronald Reagan's staff as the house Democrat. She later served the Town of Wrentham as a member of the Planning Board and of the Zoning Board of Appeals. Her long-time avocation was handweaving, especially of rugs, which she designed on paper (or computer) and then produced on full size looms, with yarn she had dyed herself. She was a charter member of the weaving community in Missoula MT, at a time when that community was in its most creative phase. Later she belonged to the Weavers Guild of Rhode Island, serving as its Treasurer for several years. She loved tennis, reading (chiefly murder mysteries and political history), acoustic music, and politics, but had a special passion for the exploration of family history, which she researched with increasing diligence over time. She loved the Seymour family ranch in Walnut Grove CA, where she and her parents spent holidays in her childhood that were among her most cherished memories. Later she became a co-owner of the ranch and supported it by keeping track, for all the owners, of reportage on the intricate politics of water usage in California. Think of the film Chinatown. All her life the ranch was a place of serenity, whether it was near or far. There she first encountered cats, which became another of her life's loves. Her house always had one or two cats around, usually orange males with sweet and friendly dispositions--poozlekitties she called them. The last of them, Sam, survives her. Her laughter, sharp wit, strong will, and ultimately her generous heart will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her loving husband, Charles F. Ahern (Ted), for whom she was the great blessing of his life, and by a number of Seymour family cousins: Dorothy Wheeler of Walnut Grove CA, Sarah Cobb and her husband Nat of Albuquerque NM, Kate Rock and her husband Tony of Brooklyn NY, Caroline Perkins and her husband Tadd of Seattle WA, Deborah Seymour of Seattle WA, and by their children and other loving relatives. Also by relatives in the Hoover and Harding lines of her family. Burial will be private. A memorial service in her honor will be held on Friday, April 27 at 11:00 AM at the First Universalist Society in Franklin, 262 Chestnut St., Franklin MA. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers donations in Sue's memory may be made to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 350 So. Huntington Ave., Boston MA 02130.
