Jykla Louise "Jake" (Mansfield) Grills, 85, of Chesterfield, passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas.
She was born in Muncie on March 22, 1932, the daughter of Richard and Mary Mansfield.
She was a graduate of Muncie Central High School (1950) and was known locally for baking delicious cakes (always with butter cream icing, not the whipped kind). She was a life member of Chesterfield Christian Church and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 408. She was active in Chesterfield politics as a poll worker and court clerk in the late 1970's and managed concessions for the Chesterfield Baseball Association in the 1960's.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Johnnie L. Grills "Hon" in 2005.
Jake is survived by her four children, Rick (Michele) Grills of Anderson, Dianne (Luke) Philippsen of Yorktown, Karen (David) Carmony of San Antonio and Dale Grills of Chesterfield; nine grandchildren, Michael (Courtney) Barnes of Lapel, Jerry (Stacy) Barnes of Anderson, Daniel Carmony of Mico, Texas, Matt (Kristen) Grills of Greenwood, Jason (Rachel) Carmony of San Antonio, Melanie (Joe) Wachs of Frankton, Kevin (Amy) Carmony of Mico, Texas, Amanda (Brennan) Sprague of Lafayette and Aimee (Corey) Griffin of Fort Walton Beach, Fl; 18 great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and too many birds and stray cats to count.
She enjoyed reading the Bible, cooking for friends and family, collecting stuffed animals, singing with the church choir, watching IU basketball and the St. Louis Cardinals, going to the movies, gardening and cheering on her great-grandchildren at sporting events.
She loved God and looked for the best in every person and every situation. Her pride and joy was her family, believing each member to be a superstar in his or her own right.
They will miss her laughter and the way her eyes twinkled as she excitedly shared news of what her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were doing. (They will also miss her fried chicken, chocolate cake, buckeyes, bowls of party mix, rhubarb pie, and so many other dishes, always made with love.)
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service in Anderson and 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at Chesterfield Christian Church. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Chesterfield Christian Church, with Pastor Ned Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Bronnenberg Cemetery in Chesterfield.
Memorial contributions can be sent to Chesterfield Christian Church, 207 East Plum Street, Chesterfield, IN 46017 or Gateway Church, 6623 Five Palms Drive, San Antonio, TX 78242.
