RONALD SHERMAN “RONNIE” GUMM, 76, passed away on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at his home. He was born March 17, 1941 to Mary (Tellman) and Harry Gumm.
Ronnie retired from CSX Railroad after 35 years of service. He served four years in the Air Force as a Medic, was a former member of L & N Country Club for 35 years, and a former member of the men’s club at Iroquois Golf Course until his health declined. Ronnie bowled at Ken Bowl Lanes for 40 years with his Dad and his six brothers, “Ron’s boys”. (Ken Bowl Lanes nursery practically raised his daughters). He enjoyed golf, football and U of L and U of K basketball games on TV, but his greatest pleasure was playing golf. Rumor has it that “orange” golf balls were created so guys like Ronnie could play golf in the snow. He loved 50’s music, dancing and bourbon. He also loved being with his loving family and his feline pets, Baby Girl, Doober, Timmy and Buster Brown. Even though he said he would never “own” a cat, he didn’t, they owned him.
Although Ronnie wasn’t a “church goer”, he prayed every night and had faith that when he passed from this world, he would see Christ in the ever after. Ronnie had a strong will to live even though his health in the last few years was rapidly declining. He is now out of pain and at peace with his Lord. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones and his many friends.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 34 years, Joan (Nuneman) Gumm; daughters, Linda Gumm (Jim), Sheri Talley (Greg), Lisa Combs (Jim) and Tina Keown; 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; stepchildren, Kevin Ash and Kenny Ash (Kim); four step grandchildren; one step great grandchild; brothers, Tommy (Ruth Ann), Joey (Helen Motley), Jerry, Billy (Rose), Bobby Carl, and Randy (Linda).
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway with burial in Resthaven Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2- 8 p.m. Thursday.
