POLAND - Gene Guthrie, age 86, passed away on March 8, 2018, peacefully at his home. He was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on October 27, 1931, to the late Eugene Burr Guthrie and Jeannette (Smith) Guthrie. After graduating from Austin High School, Gene attended business school at Texas Christian University and served in the US Naval Reserves. He married Janice Redmond in 1984 between tennis matches. They enjoyed ‘retirement,’ moving between Texas and Maine, building or refurbishing several homes. They settled in Poland, ME in 2008. Gene’s career as a small business owner, financial controller and later as a real estate adventurer brought him great satisfaction. He worked for Johnson & Johnson in Texas and Fairchild (Texas and Maine) as a financial controller and started small business ventures in his own interest. Gene loved fine art, music, dancing, sports, and managing his business portfolio. He also loved laughing and enjoyed being with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Gene will be remembered as a loving, sweet, and sensitive man. His sister, Janet Andrews predeceased him as did his first wife and mother of his children, Mary Robin Guthrie. Gene is survived by his wife, Janice Redmond and her children, Stephen Sarkozy, Sarah Sarkozy and grandchildren Christine and Sean Mulkern; Gene’s children, Linda Guthrie, Courtenay Johnson, Rachel Guthrie, and Burr Guthrie; his grandchildren, Wilder Shafter, Isabella Szumowski, Parker Szumowski, Taja Cato, Oceana Cato, Ry Guthrie, and Luella Guthrie.
