Mary L. (Grover) Cunningham, 87, passed away March 5, 2018 following a long illness. Mary “Mae” was born in Somerville, MA on June 15, 1930 to Robert and Gertrude (Stevens) Grover. Her beloved husband of 61 years, William predeceased her in January 2017. Mary leaves her children, Cheryl Cunningham of Worcester, Brenda Gordon and her husband Richard of Sutton, Lynda Holmes and her husband Warren of Holden, Gail Economou and her husband Kosta of Worcester, and Mark W. Cunningham of Manchester, CT. She also leaves her grandchildren, Jonathan, David and his wife Andrea, Timothy and his wife Alison, Daniel, Julia, Kristina and Kendall and her great grandchildren Elena and Seth. Mary’s sister Elsie Fyfe and brother Robert Grover predeceased her. Her surviving siblings are Bessie Dalelio of Melrose, Douglas Grover of Woburn and Donna DiPietro of Natick.
Mary was thoughtful and kind, adored her family and enjoyed being a homemaker. Having her family near gave her the greatest joy. She was an excellent cook and baker and loved preparing meals and desserts for her family. She had an artistic and creative flair, and spent many hours making clothes, knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching, and decorating the house for the holidays. She was also industrious and upholstered furniture, wall-papered, painted and loved to spend time gardening. She loved birds.
Mary worked for Multiple Listing Service and then for Worcester Insurance Company at the time she retired. She had been a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Worcester.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at the Christopher House who cared for Mary over several years, with a special thank you to Elizabeth and Claudette for their compassionate, attentive and respectful care.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Mary’s visitation in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue on Friday, March 9th at 11:00 AM followed by her funeral service at 12:00 PM in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s memory to a charity of the donor’s choice.
