On Tuesday, February 28, 2018, Mary Hoen Woods, of New Bedford, MA passed away peacefully at the age of 95 years. Mary will be forever remembered by her children, Jill Horton-Simms, Peter B. Horton and his wife Pam, Elizabeth H. Sharf and her husband Robert, Sara C. King and her husband Bill and Derek J. Horton and his wife Grace, and her two stepsons, Edward H. Woods and William S. Woods.
Mary will remain in the hearts of her numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, dear friends, and her two Bichons, Pudge and Pi.
Mrs. Woods attended the College of William and Mary in Willliamsburg, VA, but owing to World War II she transferred to Douglass College, a part of Rutgers, to be closer to family.
She was happily married to William H. Woods, who passed in 2005, for 46 years. She was also a beloved secretary at Cabot Elementary School, Newton, MA, and had many stories about the children and families she touched. Bill and Mary spent many fun years with family and friends in Naples, Florida, from 1989 to 2007, when she moved to New Bedford where she enjoyed being a parishioner at Grace Episcopal Church.
Her Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 17th at 9 AM in Grace Episcopal Church, corner of County St. and Spring St. in New Bedford. Visiting hours are omitted. Memorial donations in her name can be made in her memory to the Woods Arts & Literacy Fund, a fund of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts, 128 Union St., Suite 403, New Bedford, Massachusetts 02740, (508)996-8253, to carry on her contributions to the education of youth and to the cultural fabric of New Bedford. Arrangements are with the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
