Obituary

Jan A. Ranken of Provincetown passed away Sunday, February 25th at Seashore Point after a year-long battle with cancer. She was 78.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in Brookhaven, Long Island, NY, she was the daughter of the late George and Virginia (Weeks] Ranken. After high school Jan attended the California State University at Fresno and received her degree from Chapman College in Orange California. She was a Social Worker for the State of California.

After early retirement, Jan moved back east, finally settling in Provincetown. Well known as a tireless worker for charitable causes, she ran Bingo and helped at Music @ 5:00 for the UU Meeting House. Jan also did yeoman’s work for CASAS and volunteered at the Provincetown Theater. Among her friends, Jan was known as the ‘Queen of Raffle Ticket Sales’ for the money she raised for the Meeting House. In her limited free time, she enjoyed line dancing and a good game of poker. Jan also was an avid lover of all animals!

Jan is survived by a brother, Peter Ranken of Stuart, FL, cousins Barbara Helmus of Garden City, NY, John Alexanderson of Concord, MA and Linda Butler of Charlottesville, VA. She also leaves 2 nieces, a nephew, 2 grandnephews and a large number of close and supportive friends.

The family would like to thank Kerry Cox of Outer Cape Health Service and the entire Hospice Care team for their outstanding care.

A celebration of Jan’s life, will be at 3:00 pm, Sunday March 4th, at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House, 236 Commercial St., Provincetown.
