Mary A. Beattie, R.N.
Retired St. John’s Hospital Nurse

TEWKSBURY: Mary A. (O’Rourke) Beattie, R.N., age 100, a resident of Tewksbury for over 95 years, passed away at the Lowell General Hospital with her devoted daughter at her side, on Monday, February 19, 2018.

Mary was the beloved wife of Andrew Beattie, Jr. who passed away in 1972.

Born in Lowell on October 16, 1917, she was one of four children of the late James O’Rourke and the late Bridget (Jones) O’Rourke.

Mary was raised in Tewksbury, attended Tewksbury schools, and graduated from Lowell High School.

Following high school, she attended the Tewksbury Hospital School of Nursing, where she earned her degree in Nursing in 1939.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a Registered Nurse by the Boston City Hospital, and later at the former St. John’s Hospital in Lowell (Lowell General Hospital-Saints Campus).

Mary was lifelong communicant of St. William’s Church in Tewksbury.

She was a former member of the Tewksbury Golden Age Club & Senior Drop-In-Center.

Mary loved to travel especially to Ireland, England, and Scotland.

She will lovingly be remembered for her beautiful blue eyes, caring and compassionate manner, and quick Irish wit.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Eleanor M. Beattie, of Tewksbury; her sister, Margaret E. Saunders, of West Roxbury; also many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.

Mary was the sister of the late James E. O’Rourke, and Terence B. O’Rourke.

Calling hours are Friday, Feb. 23, from 4-8 p.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Her funeral procession will begin on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by her Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. at St. William’s Church, 1351 Main St., Rte. 38, Tewksbury. Interment will follow at Tewksbury Cemetery.
