Bartolomeu M. Gomes, 85, of New Bedford died Monday February 19, 2018.
Born in Santo Antao, Cape Verde, the son of the late Maria Gomes, he lived in New Bedford for many years. He had been employed by the International Longshoremen's Association, Local 1413 and also as a merchant mariner for the Gulf Oil Company until his retirement.
Mr. Gomes was a member of the Bisca Tournament Club. He was a lifelong friend and fan of the musical group Tavares, and loved all Cape Verdean music. He played soccer in his youth, and absolutely loved watching his Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and numerous soccer teams.
He is survived by his wife Evelyn (Britto) Gomes; his children, Maria Gomes of Cape Verde, Maria Braxton of East Providence, RI, Anthony Gomes of Cumberland, RI, Regina Brown of Providence, RI, and John Gomes of Riverside, RI; his stepchildren, June Watson, Allan Monteiro, and Arthur "Buddy" Monteiro, all of New Bedford; his sister, Albertina Silva of Phoenix, AZ; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Joao E. Gomes and Guimar Gomes, who was his twin, and stepfather of the late Janice Monteiro.
His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday Feb. 24, 2018 at 10 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery.
