Obituary

Our beautiful and beloved mother, Iris Bruno, transitioned from complications on 2/14/2018 at L&M Hospital in New London, CT.

We want to thank L&M Hospital physicians and staff for their care and dedication as well as mega thanks to physicians, nursing and help staff at Groton Regency Senior Center for caring so beautifully and tenderly for our mother the three years that she resided there.

Mommy was born in Maricao, Puerto Rico on 3/10/1917. In her late twenties she immigrated to New York City where she began a career as a phenomenal seamstress – creating patterns for a large enterprise. She rose to become the manager and then successfully organized to form a union for its workers. She loved New York City and remained long after she retired. Although she was a fiercely independent woman, after 50+ years in the city she migrated to Groton, CT to be closer to family.

Mommy lived a long, interesting and full life. She was a woman of strong faith, as well as very intelligent, bright, witty, wise, courteous to everyone she met, charming and just simply delightful. She loved the theatre, poetry, music and song, and could sing beautifully even in her late years. Also, in her late 90s mommy could still recite every work of poetry she had learned as a young girl.

She is survived by her two daughters, Dolores Rigg Ortiz and Aida Olivencia, and her grandchildren, Perry Gonzalez, David Gonzalez, Beverly Gonzalez and Shellie Olivencia-Neff along with many great grandchildren.

We have loved you fully and will miss you terribly mommy but your spirit lives in us all always.
Rest in Peace Mommy and sing your songs in Heaven.
