Hazel S. (Strachan) Martin Hassig, 97, of Newport RI and formerly of Natick died Tuesday February 13, 2018 at the St Clare Nursing Home in Newport RI.
She was the beloved wife of the late Edward Hassig and former wife of the late Dr. Edward Martin Jr.
Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Christina (Fleming) Strachan.
Hazel graduated Girls Latin School in Boston and from LaSalle Junior College in Newton.
Mrs. Hassig was a former Administrative Secretary for the Natick School Department working at the Cole Elementary School for 27 years.
She enjoyed travel, especially winter trips to Siesta Key in Sarasota FL, reading, cards ,bingo, visiting Fox Woods, and maintaining her many friendships throughout the years.
She was proud of her Scottish heritage and of uncles Hugh and Frederick Fleming who served in the famed Black Watch Royal Highland Regiment in World War I.
Hazel formerly resided at the Southgate Community in Shrewsbury which she thoroughly enjoyed for many years.
She is survived by one son Edward Martin III and his wife Christy of Edwards CO, one daughter Nancy C. Petrin and her husband Thomas of Newport RI, three grandchildren, Ashley Russell and her husband Peter of Gypsum CO, Dustin Martin of Fort Collins CO, Haley Martin of Kihei HI, great –grandchildren, Violet, Alex Russell and Avery Martin, and many nieces and nephews.
She was also the sister of the late Col. John Strachan and Dr. Harry Strachan Jr.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Funeral Service on Tuesday February 20 at 10:00 A.M. in the First Congregational Church of Natick. Burial will follow in Milton Cemetery.
Visiting hours in the John Everett and Sons Funeral Home 4 Park Street, at Natick Common are Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M.
