Obituary

Nobert Nasimento Macara, Provincetown son, Navy serviceman, fishing boat captain, avid golfer, loving husband and father of five, died peacefully at the age of 98. He died Saturday evening, February 10, 2018 at Cape Cod Hospital after a brief stint of pneumonia and related complications. He was just one month short of his 99th birthday. Always known to be an honest, church-going, kind, intelligent and open-minded man who always believed in common sense and moderation, Nobert was loved by his family and well respected in his community. He will be dearly missed.

Nobert Macara was born in Provincetown on March 11, 1919, a son of Portuguese immigrants Joseph "Papa Joe" Macara and Mary (Lopes) Macara. Nobert was the last one surviving of his brothers and sisters from a family of nine kids. Nobert grew up in Provincetown and was never very far from the sea.

As a young man he enlisted in the Navy during World War II, serving on a PT Boat in the South Pacific, stationed in New Guinea. His experience as a fisherman helped him in the service as he taught fellow servicemen the ropes–how to tie knots and such. After the war, Nobert came down with Malaria and was recovering at Chelsea Naval Hospital when he met his future wife-to-be, Juanita Rita (Michaud) Macara. Juanita, who was from Eagle Lake, Maine, was the Navy officer nurse in charge of the hospital ward where he was a patient in recovery. They were married in Provincetown, where Juanita was welcomed warmly by Nobert's family and hometown.

Nobert bought and captained the commercial fishing dragger "Liberty" and made his living as a fisherman for many years. Nobert and Juanita raised a family of five children in their house on Brewster Street, a neighborhood here in Provincetown known for its harmonious mixture of working class families, artists, writers and more affluent, recent property owners. For several decades after retirement, Nobert and Juanita spent winters in their West Palm Beach, Florida condominium where they remained close to their extended family of relatives and friends. They were a devoted and happily married couple for more than 70 years.

Nobert is survived by his loving wife Juanita; daughter Claire; four sons: Peter, Richard, Jacques and Dean; two grandchildren (from Jacques): Heather (Pearson) and Derek Macara; and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Nobert's family from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, February 20th at the Gately Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way, Provincetown. A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, February 21st, at 11:00 am at St. Peter the Apostle Church, Prince St., Provincetown. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.
